I’ve been having a weird time recently and have a whole jumble of stuff to talk about, none of which goes together nicely. I’ll see how much I can get done before Kiran gets bored blowing raspberries at himself in the mirror.

The last two weeks I’ve come down with a string of consecutive random mystery illnesses – lost my voice, sudden stomach pains that disappeared as suddenly as they started and then yesterday I managed to spill a whole cup of freshly brewed coffee in my lap and gave my leg some nice second degree burns. I’m starting to think I’m cursed. And maybe I am because everyone in Bali has a story about someone being a victim of black magic. In fact we weren’t allowed out of the house for the days preceding our wedding for fear that someone would put a spell on us (apparently it’s not uncommon for the bride to change her mind at the last minute because of ‘black magic’…. hmmm…). Anyway I can’t think of any potential enemies who may have put a curse on me but if I come down with one more mystery illness or accident, I think a trip to the Balian (think white witch doctor)may be in order.

Kiran is sleeping less and less during the day and crawling at lightning speed. I feel like I spend most of my time picking him up just before he crawls off the edge of something. I just put him down in the kitchen for a second while I peeled an apple for him and when I looked down he was chewing on a packet of MSG… This coupled with my constant illness means that I haven’t really done any work this month and so i’m broke again (who am I kidding? I’m always broke). Sometimes I wish I could go back in time to my childfree self and shake myself saying “look how much STUFF you can get done!!”. Thinking about hiring a nanny again…

Maya, my little angel, (ha, that’s a description you don’t hear very often these days) is sleeping MUCH better than she was a few weeks ago and is usually asleep without fuss by 8.30 after drinking her milk and reading some bedtime stories as long as I’ve not let her nap too long during the day. She’s usually waking up once in the night for water although the heat is not helping things at the moment as she gets terrible heat rash and sometimes can’t sleep because she’s itchy. Anyway, things are much improved from not so long back when she was going to bed every night at 10pm and crying to watch a dvd before she fell asleep. Next we have to work on eliminating the bottle which is way overdue I know but it took so long to get her to drink milk at all, I’ve not been in a rush to phase it out.

Talking of Maya, I can’t believe my little baby is going to be TWO in less than a week! I have presents but nothing else sorted and I have no idea what to do. I wanted to have a party but Made told me that she has so many friends in the village (quite the little socialite my daughter!) and we’d have to invite them all, that there would be about 100 people at the party. I really don’t think I’m up to the task of feeding and entertaining 100 people for a 2-year-old’s birthday party. Plus she has school in the morning and we’re picking up my friend from the airport in the early evening and have to fit a nap in somewhere between that so there’s not much time left for partying. So I’m thinking just something very small but I’m not sure what yet. I REALLY want her to have a gruffalo birthday cake but I don’t know of anyone in the Ubud area who can design cakes like that. I did find a very cool cupcake company in Denpasar for next year. I may just have a go at decorating a cake myself…. Maya’s cousin Iris shares her birthday and they’ll be sharing the cake too – he’ll just have to like the Gruffalo too! Maya knows it’s her birthday soon and whenever we say “whose birthday is it soon?” she says “Maya! Two!” and holds up all 5 fingers because she hasn’t figured out how to just hold up 2 yet.

Apart from all that, I’ve just booked a hotel in Seminyak for the little mini break I’m having when my mum is here. So very exciting! I have a big list of shops and cafes I want to visit. And then of course my friend Lucy is going to be here just before my mum so I forsee lots of girly catchups, wine and spa days. Now I just need to stay germ and injury free for the next few months.
